How to Clean Your Engagement Ring | Ring Care Tips from a Local Toledo Jeweler
Estate Jewelers is the local Toledo engagement ring authority. They sat down with us to answer all your questions about caring for your engagement ring and keeping your diamonds pristine.
.
“How do I clean my ring?”
“There are a lot of home cleaning remedies out there, but be careful: solutions that are fine for diamonds may not be safe for other gemstones or metals. For diamond jewelry, we recommend using the jewelry cleaner provided by your jeweler or a mixture of a few drops of Dawn dish detergent in warm-not-hot water. Let your ring soak in the solution for a few minutes, then gently scrub with a new, soft baby toothbrush. To rinse, place it in a new dish of lukewarm water and then dry it with a soft cloth, being careful not to snap the prongs. Also, ask for special instructions on gemstone and pearl jewelry as standard cleaners can damage colored stones. It’s still a good idea to have your ring professionally cleaned regularly.”
2. “How often should I clean my engagement ring?”
“Daily wear and tear cant take its toll, even on fine jewelry. We recommend cleanings and inspections at least twice per year. The good news is, at Estate Jewelers, it is completely free to have your item cleaned and inspected and it only takes a few minutes. The last thing you want is to look down and notice your diamond has fallen out of its setting because of a bend prong. Minor preventive repairs now can save you a lot of heartache later - trust us.”
“When should I take off my engagement ring?”
“While you might feel like you never want to take off that rock, you should, and you should do it often. Working out at the gym, washing dishes, laundry and other household tasks will put stress on your ring, from stretching the band to loosening the delicate settings. Also, harsh cleaners, chlorine and bromine from pools or hot tubs do irreversible damage to gold and delicate settings. Please be careful what you lift while wearing your ring.”
“Should I store it in a ring dish or ring box?”
“It’s smart to have a safe place to store your ring when you’re not wearing it. Keep it in a clean, dry place like a fabric-lined ring box, or in a case with compartments and dividers to prevent pieces from scratching each other. A ring dish could be used as a dedicated spot for safekeeping while you’re cooking.”
“Should I get engagement ring insurance?”
“While nothing can replace the sentimental value of an engagement ring or significant jewelry purchase, if you have it properly appraised and insured for its full replacement value, you’ll at least be covered if it’s ever lost, stolen or damaged. Estate Jewelers offers a free insurance replacement value appraisal with your purchase.”
